Our Approach to CUI and Technical Data

PH Tool manufactures precision NDT reference standards and calibration artifacts for some of the world's most demanding industries, including aerospace, defense, nuclear, and research laboratories.

Unlike organizations involved in the design, manufacture, or sustainment of defense systems, our role is intentionally narrow. We manufacture calibration standards by introducing precisely controlled discontinuities into customer-supplied material. As a result, we generally require only a small subset of the technical information associated with a program.

Our Philosophy: Receive Only What Is Necessary

PH Tool requires only the information necessary to manufacture the calibration standard. Whenever possible, customers are encouraged to remove or redact information unrelated to the required calibration features.

In many cases, our manufacturing process requires only:

  • Material specification
  • Basic part geometry
  • Locations of required calibration features
  • Dimensions and tolerances of the required machined discontinuities

Information relating to system design, operational performance, assembly details, or other program-specific technical data is generally unnecessary for us to perform our work.

Our objective is simple:

Can we define the work so that Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) never needs to be exchanged?

We have found that many calibration standards can be successfully manufactured from simplified or redacted drawings without affecting the quality or functionality of the finished artifact.

Working With Sensitive Programs

When additional technical information is required, PH Tool works closely with customers to determine the minimum amount of information necessary to complete the project.

Depending on customer requirements, this may include:

  • Hardcopy drawings only
  • Customer-supplied redacted drawings
  • Simplified manufacturing drawings
  • Read-only access to customer-controlled document portals
  • Return or secure destruction of customer documentation upon project completion

Our goal is to minimize the distribution and retention of sensitive technical information while maintaining the precision, traceability, and craftsmanship our customers expect from PH Tool.

Precision Through Specialization

PH Tool exists for one purpose:

To manufacture exceptional calibration standards.

Because our scope is so specialized, we believe the most secure approach is often the simplest one: exchange only the technical information required to perform the work.

That philosophy has allowed us to support critical inspection programs for decades while keeping our focus where it belongs: manufacturing the highest-quality NDT reference standards available.

Early in your project, ask yourself one question:

Does PH Tool actually need access to CUI to manufacture this calibration standard?

In many cases, the answer is no.

We are happy to work with your engineering and compliance teams to identify the minimum technical information required to complete your project.
