UT Reference Standards and Calibration Blocks Made from Your Forgings

Forge‑derived ultrasonic reference standards require a very different approach than catalog calibration blocks. When inspection specifications demand blocks made from actual forging material, PH Tool has the experience, equipment, and discipline to execute this work correctly.

We routinely manufacture FBH and SDH ultrasonic reference standards, both from major OEM specifications and custom designs, machined directly from customer‑supplied forgings and large billets. This includes aerospace engine forgings, proprietary alloys, and heavy forging sections used for critical ultrasonic inspection.

Our focus is not just geometry. It is preserving material pedigree, harvesting from specific locations or orientations, meeting stringent dimensional and hole tolerances, and delivering inspection standards that truly represent the material being inspected.

What Makes Forge UT Standards Different

Ultrasonic reference standards for forging inspection are fundamentally different from calibration blocks made from bar or plate stock.

Many forge UT specs require:

  • Material cut directly from production or representative forgings
  • Matching heat treatment / acoustic properties
  • Proprietary or OEM‑controlled alloys that cannot be independently sourced
  • Surface conditions that simulate as‑forged inspection surfaces
  • Tight tolerances on hole diameter, depth, and location

PH Tool’s processes are built specifically for this type of work, including when raw material arrives rough, oversized, or with limited machining allowance.

Material Sources and Forging Pedigree

PH Tool regularly machines UT reference standards from:

  • Engine forgings supplied by the customer or OEM
  • Large, forged billets and discs
  • Proprietary aerospace alloys

In many cases, the supplied material is rough cut, (preferably oversized,) or already partially processed. We work with customers early to confirm:

  • Size and shape of provided materials
  • Required machining allowance
  • Preferred orientation relative to forging flow
  • Final block sizes achievable from the supplied forging
  • Any pre‑inspection or screening the customer must perform before shipment

When a specification requires blocks to be cut only from specific forgings, PH Tool does not substitute material or alter that requirement.

FBH and SDH Capabilities for Forging Inspection

PH Tool manufactures a wide range of FBH and SDH reference standards used specifically for ultrasonic inspection of forgings, including:

  • Flat Bottom Hole standards with tight diameter and depth tolerances
  • Side‑drilled holes positioned with specific metal travel distances
  • Multiple drilled hole sizes ranging from 1/64” and up (even smaller possibilities with EDM’d holes.)
  • Axial and radial hole placement driven by forging geometry
  • Blocks machined from large diameter stock and heavy forgings

We achieve and exceed tolerances commonly required for forge inspections and understand how FBH depth, spacing, and orientation affect ultrasonic response in forged material.

OEM and Aerospace Specification Experience

PH Tool has direct experience supporting forge UT reference standards tied to major aerospace and industrial OEM requirements, including projects associated with:

  • Pratt & Whitney SIM‑type inspection standards
  • GE-design FBH and SDH calibration blocks
  • Blocks made in exotic alloys such as Rene, Titanium, Inconel, and others
  • Proprietary aerospace alloys supplied as rough or machined forgings
  • Application-specific inspection programs created by forge Level III’s
  • Large billet and forging sizes (up to 10,000 lbs.)

We understand that some OEM standards require additional characterization or documentation beyond basic dimensional inspection and we engage early to define those expectations.

Verification, Documentation, and Traceability

Forge UT reference standards are only as defensible as their documentation.

Depending on the project and specification, PH Tool can support:

  • As‑built dimensional inspection reports
  • FBH or SDH verification using established internal methods
  • Material traceability tied to customer‑supplied forging documentation
  • Clear identification and serialization of finished blocks

We work with quality and Level III personnel to ensure delivered standards meet both technical and audit expectations.

Equipment Suited for Heavy Forgings

PH Tool operates dedicated equipment capable of supporting forge‑based work, including:

  • Large-format EDM and CNC machines for precise reflector creation in difficult alloys
  • 3D scanning capabilities
  • Fixturing strategies for irregular forging geometries
  • In‑house expertise focused exclusively on NDT reference standards

 Large Forging 4

This is not secondary work for us. Forge UT standards are a natural extension of our core business of exclusively supporting NDT.

Typical Applications

PH Tool forge‑based UT reference standards are commonly used for:

  • Ultrasonic inspection qualification of production forgings
  • Setup and sensitivity checks for forging UT systems
  • OEM‑mandated inspection programs
  • Audit‑defensible inspection blocks tied to actual forging material
